Caffeine – Friend not Foe

Posted on 08/08/2018

caffeine health benefits

Caffeine has had a bad wrap in the past being linked to various health risks such as heart palpitations, insomnia and increases in blood pressure. However, our perception of caffeine has changed dramatically in recent months since it has been taken off the carcinogenic list, and research is much more vocal about the possible health benefits.

Moderate coffee consumption has now been linked to a longer lifespan and a reduction in the risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, uterine and liver cancer, cirrhosis and gout.

In addition to the significant physiological benefits, caffeine has also been attributed to being mentally astute. An Austrian Study indicates that caffeine gives you a mental boost for approximately 45 minutes, whilst researchers from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research found conclusive evidence that caffeine supported cognitive function when optimal sleep patterns were not available.

As with most consumables, excessive consumption carries its associated risks such as an increase in anxiety, heartburn, frequent urination and heart palpitations. However, with so many positive effects being attributed to the moderate consumption of caffeine, it is clearly distinguishing itself as a positive dietary inclusion for those who are health conscious.

How Much Caffeine is Safe to Consume per Day?

A study carried out by the NHS on 25/04/2017 suggested that drinking up to 4 cups of coffee per day carries no health risk (3 cups for pregnant women). One cup of coffee contains approximately 100mg of caffeine.
